THE ILLITERATE

In the first census of present-day Latvia, conducted during the Russian Empire, Vita’s ancestors were described with one word: «неграмотный» in Russian, meaning one who does not know how to read and write. The play brings together Vita, her mother, her best friend, and her Russian friend to investigate the complex history of her Latvian ancestors. Together, they explore themes such as the complicated family histories during the Soviet Union, belonging, and identity.

Gathering her closest loved ones together on one stage is also an attempt to initiate a dialogue and (re)consider behavior in everyday life in the face of fear and political pressure.
